Comet Men Outlast Rhodes, 115-111, in New Year's Eve Clash

RICHARDSON, TX (12.31.16) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid Saturday afternoon with a 115-111, back-and-forth win over Rhodes College in non-conference action.

The Comets (2-8) set school records for free throws made (46) and attempted (58) as they shot 64.2 percent from the field against the pressure defense of Rhodes. UTD will wrap up its non-conference slate Tuesday night when the Comets host Hendrix at 6 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

UTD took advantage of the Lynx' full-court press early in the game, pulling out to a 18-4 lead not six minutes into the contest. The Comets led by as many as 16 points in the opening half before Rhodes found its rhythm from three-point range to eventually take a one-point lead, 56-55, at the break.

The two teams traded leads six times over the first nine minutes of the second half before the Lynx took command with a six-point lead, 82-76, on a Bryce Berry free throw with 10:58 left to play. Rhodes would hold the lead until the 5:48 mark when Jon Hatch hit a lay up with 5:48 left to lift the Comets to a 98-97 advantage. After three more lead changes, the Comets took control  with 3:12 left on a pair of Caleb Banks free throws, giving UTD a 107-106 lead. UTD added free throws by Dimitrius Underwood to grab a three-point lead, but the Lynx answered and knotted the game, 111-111, with 1:16 on the clock on a WIll McIntyre three-pointer from the corner.

On the Comets next trip down the floor, Underwood hit two free shots give UTD back a two-point lead and the Comets then forced a missed three-pointer by Rhodes. Hatcher corralled the rebound and then hit two free throws to ice the win.

UTD's 115 points is a season high and is just nine points shy of the program record (124). The Comets ended the game 34-of-53 from the floor, hitting just 1-of-7 three-pointers, and finished with 44 rebounds. Banks scored a game-high 22 points to lead six Comets in double digits, while adding 11 assists and three rebounds. Kyle Coulter had 20 points, Dimitrius Underwood had 19 points and Reagan Keogh added 15 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. Curtis Allen added 11 points and Hatcher had 10 points.
