RICHARDSON, TX (02.06.16) - The UT Dallas softball team blasted three home runs but it wasn't enough to collect its first win of the season as the Comets dropped both ends of doubleheader to Pacific Lutheran Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.
The Comets (now 0-4) will open American Southwest Conference play this weekend with a four-game home series with Sul Ross State. The two teams will square off in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday before playing two final games at 12 p.m. Saturday, all at the UTD Softball Field.
Game 1 - PLU 12, UTD 6 (8 inn.)The Comets got a pair of long balls from newcomers
Sara Morales and
Tiffany Birdwell to snag a 4-1 lead in the 3rd inning, but could not hold on as the visiting Lutes plated three runs in the 7th and pulled away with an eight-run 8th to take first game of Saturday's twin bill, 12-6.
Freshman starter
Allie Stephens pitched well enough to win as she scattered six hits in 5.1 total innings of work with two strikeouts, tossing the first five innings and then re-entering the game in the 8th. PLU scored three runs on two hits and a walk to force the extra inning and then pushed across eight runs in the 8th. UTD rallied in the bottom of the final frame, scoring a run on an RBI groundout by
Kendall Moore and a two-out double by
Ravin Wilson.
Game 2 - PLU 6, UTD 4UTD staked the Lutes a five-run lead in the 1st inning and nearly battled back to win the second game before falling, 6-4.
Brittany Perkins belted UTD's third home run of the day in the 2nd frame as the Comets scored four unanswered runs to eventually draw within a score, 5-4, after four innings.
Morales opened the scoring for the Comets with an RBI infield single in the 1st and UTD added two runs in the 4th an single to left by
Aly Hudec. The Lutes (now 4-2) tacked on an insurance run in the 6th to complete the scoring.
Stephens pitched 6.2 more strong innings in relief in the night cap. The Comets out-hit PLU, 8-7, in the second game.
