MARSHALL,TX (03.14.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team got back win column with a pair of wins Monday afternoon to take its American Southwest Conference series at East Texas Baptist and evened its season re
cord after being mired in a four-game losing streak.
The Comets (now 7-7, 2-4 ASC) rebounded after a tough 14-2 loss to ETBU Sunday night to blast 22 combined hits in Monday's sweep of the host Tigers. UTD took Monday's opener, 12-8, before holding on for a 5-3 win in the series finale. With both road games this week at Hendrix canceled due to field conditions, the Comets will return to action this weekend to host nationally ranked and defending ASC champion Texas-Tyler. The two teams will open the three-game series with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday before a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
Game 1 - ETBU 14, UTD 2 (Sunday)After a two-day weather delay, UTD returned to action Sunday night with a 14-2 loss at East Texas Baptist to open a three-game conference road series.
UTD opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd with an RBI single by
Haden Johnson, bringing home
David McKenzie. Trailing 2-1 in the 3rd, the Comets knotted the game with a two-out single by McKenzie, scoring
Tim Cole from second base. However, ETBU scored four runs on a pair of two-run homers in the 4th and added a seven-run sixth off of two more long balls to pull away for the victory.
Sophomore
Josh Covey continued to swing a hot bat as he finished the night 3-for-4 to bring his season batting average back to .500. Johnson, Cole and
Nolan Smith each ended the game 2-for-4.
Game 2 - UTD 12, ETBU 8 (Monday)The Comets again struck first as they did Sunday but held on for the victory in Monday's opener as UTD rolled to a 12-8 victory over the Tigers with a 14-hit effort.
UTD plated three runs in the 2nd, capped by a two-run double by
Cody Duplechin, but the Tigers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The Comets responded loudly in the following inning with four runs on five hits as UTD belted four doubles in the frame. After a one-out double by
Nick Marti, Johnson broke the tie with a double to center. After a single by by
Ryan Burciaga, Johnson came home on a
Mitch Barati ground out. Covey and
Jimmy Norris then used back-to-back doubles to lift UTD to a 7-3 advantage.
Leading 7-4 in the 4th, UTD added two more runs in the 5th, using three more hits. After a McKenzie single followed by a Cole double to leadoff the inning, Marti picked up an RBI with an infield single, scoring McKenzie. Johnson then gave UTD a 9-4 lead with a sacrifice fly to center, socring Cole. ETBU scored two runs in the bottom of the 4th to cut the Comet lead back to three runs, 9-6, but UTD answered with a three-run homer by Johnson to pull away.
Reid Boeselt (1-1) picked up the win in long relief, tossing 4.0 innings behind Comet starter
Brandon Lee.
Brandon Koncaba earned his first collegiate save. Burciaga was 3-for-4 while Johnson finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Game 3 - UTD 5, ETBU 3 (Monday)After the Tigers got on the board with a run in the 1st, the Comets waited to pounce on the home team until later in the game en route to a 5-3 win in the series clincher.
Down 1-0 in the 4th, UTD knotted the game with a sacrifice fly by Barati and took a 2-1 lead on a Covey single up the middle, scoring Burciaga. Duplechin then led off the 5th with a single to right and
Nick Marti blasted his first home run of the season to lift the Comets to a 4-1 advantage. UTD added an insurance run in the top of the 8th on a bases-loaded fielder's choice as Johnson beat the throw home after a Norris ground ball. The Tigers scored a run in each the 8th and 9th to cut the lead to two runs, but lead the tying run at the plate after a game-inning double play.
Jonathan May (2-2) dealt for the Comets, striking out four in 7.0 innings of work. Garrett faced the final two batters of the game to record his first save of the season.
