MARSHALL, TX (03.20.16) - After dropping a pair of road games Saturday afternoon, the UT Dallas softball team was handed a third loss by No. 6-ranked East Texas Baptist Sunday afternoon to close a three-game American Southwest Conference series.
The Comets (now 12-11, 9-6) fell on the road Saturday, 8-0 and 5-3, before dropping a 6-3 decision in Sunday's series finale. UTD will host the University of Dallas for a 6 p.m. non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at the UTD Softball Field.
Game 1 - ETBU 8, UTD 0 (6 inn.) - SaturdayThe host Tigers got a pair of three-run home runs from Kaitlyn Hollinshead as the Comets opened the series at ETBU with an 8-0, six-inning loss.
ETBU opened the scoring the 3rd with Hollinshead's first long ball and then added two runs in the 5th before complete the win with a walk-off shot by Hollinshead in the 6th. UTD managed just two hits with
Sara Navarro going 1-for-2 and
Taylor Ervin going 1-for-3.
Game 2 - ETBU 5, UTD 3 - SaturdayThe Comets jumped ahead early in the second but could not hold off ETBU as the Tigers claimed a 5-3 win to close out Saturday's doubleheader.
Melissa Livermore led of the game with a bunt single and then stole both second and third base before scoring on an RBI groundout by Ervin. However, ETBU answered with a run each in the 2nd and 3rd to grab a 2-1 lead. In the 4th, the Comets knotted the game when Ervin scored from third on a Tiger error on a
Stefanie Polderman ground ball, but ETBU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to snag a 5-2 advantage. Ervin scored second run of the game in the 6th on a Polderman RBI single, but UTD would lead a run on base and only cut the Tiger lead to two. UTD threatened in the 7th with a one-out, pinch-hit single by
Chelsea Sartor, but could not push a run across.
Ervin finished the game 2-for-4 while Livermore was 1-for-4 with her 17th and 18th stolen bases of the season.
Game 3 - ETBU 6, UTD 3 - SundayThe host Tigers jumped out to an early lead after a four-run 2nd frame to pull away for a 6-3 win in the series finale Sunday.
The Comets matched ETBU hit-for-hit but could not push across the runs.
Brittany Perkins accounted for all of the offense for UTD in the game as she launched her second home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the top of the 3rd, drawing the Comets back within two runs at the time. However, the Tigers tacked on a solo home run in the 6th to seal the win.
Livermore added another steal, giving her 19 on the season. She is now just seven steals shy of the UTD single-season record.
