Nolan Smith belted two home runs and finished with a career-high seven RBI as the UT Dallas baseball team rolled to 21-4 road win over Southwestern Tuesday night in non-conference play.
The Comets (now 11-10) did most of their damage during a nine-run 3rd inning as they closed their short four-game non-conference stretch with a 3-1 record. UTD returns to American Southwest Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at league-leader Concordia Texas.
With the Comets already leading 11-3 in the 6th frame, Smith blasted a three-run homer and then hit UTD's first grand slam in two seasons in the 7th inning as he wrapped a 3-for-4 performance with four runs scored.
The host Pirates (now 7-18) opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the 2nd before UTD plated nine runs on seven hits and sending 13 batters to the plate. The Comets evened the game, 1-1, on a wild pitch, allowing
Bobby Garner to score from third, before taking lead on the only SU erroro of the innng, allowing
Josh Covey to score from second base.
Jimmy Norris came in to score on another wild pitch to give the Comets a 3-1 lead, without a single RBI in the frame.

Tim Cole, which cleared the bases, the Comets used three consecutive singles to score their fifth run of the inning. Covey then collected his second hit of the frame with a two-run double to lift UTD to a 7-1 lead and
Jimmy Norris completed the Comets' scoring in the inning with two-run single up the middle.
Southwestern plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd to draw back within six runs, 9-3, before the Comets posted 12 unanswered runs between the 5th and 8th frames. In the 5th, Garner plated
Haden Johnson with a sacrifice bunt and Norris added an RBI triple to lift UTD to an 11-3 advantage. Smith's first long ball was the Comets' only offense in a three-run 6th and his second deep shot came in the 7th after a bases-loaded single by Johnson. UTD completed its scoring in the 8th with a two-run home run by
Ryan Burciaga, the first of his career.
Norris was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored from the leadoff spot while Johnson finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and four runs scored. Covey ended his night 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. The Comets 21 runs and 20 hits were both season highs.

Jordan Murphy pitched into the 3rd before making an early exit after giving up three runs.
Michael Deacon (1-0) was credited the win as the Comets' most effective reliever among the four UTD hurlers to follow Murphy. Deacon tossed two hitless innings with three strikeouts for his first collegiate victory.
