BELTON, TX (04.26.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team secured its 15th straight 20-win season Tuesday afternoon as the Comets held on for a 15-10 midweek victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor non-conference play.
The Comets (now 20-16) will return to American Southwest Conference play this weekend with a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m. in Longview. UTD has had 20 or more wins now in every season since the program's inception in 2002.
Nolan Smith sparked the Comets with a 4-for-5 performance with four RBI and a pair of doubles as the UTD belted out 18 hits, the second most by the squad this season. Smith was one of six Comets to have multi-hit games.
UTD opened the scoring in the 1st as
Jimmy Norris led off the game with a double and then scored on a Cru error on a bunt by
Tim Cole. However, host UMHB responded in the 2nd with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead.
The Comets knotted the game with a
Haden Johnson RBI double in the 4th and then took a 4-2 lead later in the frame on a single by Smith. The Cru drew back within in a run in the bottom of the 4th on a UTD error, but the Comets answered with five runs in the 5th to pull away, including a three-run double by
Ryan Burciaga. UTD tacked on two more runs in the 6th and four runs in the 8th to grab a 15-6 advantage before the Cru plated four runs in the bottom of the 9th.
Brandon George finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Norris, Johnson, Burciaga and
Nick Marti each had two-hit contests.
Andrew Leilich (1-0) picked up the win on the mound as the second of seven relievers of Comet starter
