TYLER, TX (04.28.16) - The UT Dallas softball team tried for the second time Thursday to rally from an early deficit, but could not catch up to 17th-ranked East Texas Baptist in an 8-5 defeat.
The Comets (23-19) almost overcame an early 5-0 deficit, but came up short as the Tigers kept a 6-5 lead going into their half othe 6th inning and added a pair of runs to pull away.
UTD, the tournament's No. 3 seed, is scheduled to face LeTourneau in the tournament's first elimination game at 10 am Friday morning.
UTD gave up an early 5-0 lead to the 17th-ranked Tigers (31-8), who greeted the Comets with two runs in the 1st and three more in the 2nd off a three-run home run. But UTD, the visitors in the contest, started to rally in the 3rd.
Taylor Ervin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and
Melissa Livermore followed with a single. After each stole a base and advanced to second and third, Britanny Perkins delivered a two-RBI single to left center to make it 5-2.
The Tigers got one of the runs back in the 4th with four straight hits to open the inning and were set to blow the game open with one run in and the bases loaded with no outs. But UTD came up with three straight line-drive outs to strand all three runners and get out of the inning down just 6-2.
That set the stage for a three-run rally in the 5th to pull the Comets to within a run. Livermore again sparked the inning with a leadoff bunt single and stolen base.
Ravin Wilson followed with another infield hit and moved into scoring position with a stolen base of her own. The Tigers loaded the bases by walking
Sara Navarro, and Stephanie Polderman brought Livermore home with a single through the right side.
Kendall Moore, who had turned in a number of defensive gems throughout the contest, followed with a single to right field to score Wilson and Navarro and trail by just 6-5.
But that was it for the Comet offense and ETBU tacked on two more in the bottom of the 6th. The No. 2-seeded Tigers advance in the winner's bracket with the win.
Moore, Livermore and Wilson all tallied a pair of hits against the Tigers, with Livermore scoring twice and Moore driving in a pair along with Perkins.
