IRVING, TX (04.05.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team did all of its scoring in the final three innings as the Comets rallied for an 8-3 win at the University of Dallas Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.
The Comets (now 13-12) return to American Southwest Conference play this weekend with a three-game home series with Ozarks. The two teams will play a single game at 2 p.m. Friday before a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
Trailing 2-0 after six innings, the Comets plated five runs in the 7th to take control of the contest. UTD added another run in the 8th and two final tallies in the 9th to complete the scoring and the comeback victory.
UTD used four hits and a pair of Crusader errors in the 7th to turn a two-run deficit into a three-run lead. The Comets scored their first run of the frame as
Haden Johnson beat out an infield single and
David McKenzie scored on an ensuing throwing error by UD.
Nick Marti then scored on a second straight Crusader miscue, a fielding error by the shortstop on a
Brandon Smith grounder.
With runners on the corners, the Comets woudl take a 3-2 lead on a infield single by
Josh Covey, allowing Johnson to come home from third base. After a wild pitch, putting Comets on second and third, UTD added its fourth run of the frame when Smith beat out the throw at the plate on a
Jimmy Norris ground ball. The Comets completed their five-run 7th with a sacrifice fly by
Brandon George, plating Covey.
The Comets added a run in the 8th on a Johnson triple to right, scoring McKenzie from first, and then tacked on RBI singles by both Norris and George in the 9th.
With just three hits through the first six innings, the Comets ended the game with 11 total hits with George ended the afternoon 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Johnson and McKenzie were each 2-for-4 while Norris finished 2-for-5 with a UTD and ASC record-tying four stolen bases, also matching the ASC career steals record with 77.
Garrett Uhl (2-0) was credited with the win as one of five Comet relievers who piching a full inning after UTD starter
Cole Hanson tossed four scoreless frames.
