AUSTIN, TX (05.07.16) - The UT Dallas baseball team bounced back in furious fashion Saturday afternoon, rushing past LeTourneau, 14-2, in an American Southwest Conference Blue Bracket Tournament elimination game at Concordia University.
The Comets (22-19) erupted for eight runs in a 13-hitter 2nd inning to jump out to a huge early lead and set the pace for a game shortened to seven innings by the ASC's tournament "run rule." The Yellowjackets season ended with a 15-22 record.
The Comets will next meet the loser of the Blue Bracket's Game 4 between Texas Tyler and Concordia at 7pm Saturday night.
A day after dropping the tournament opener on a three-hit shutout Friday night, the Comet bats exploded for 15 hits against three LETU pitchers Saturday and took advantage of two costly Yellowjacket errors in jumping ahead. Meanwhile, starter
Brandon Lee scattered just six hits and allowing just one earned run in his six-inning start, striking out five.
UTD all but assured victory in just its 2nd inning. A bunt single, hit batter and fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases and the first run scored on an eight-pitch walk by
David McKenzie. A
Mitch Barati sacrifice fly made it 2-0 and then the doors blew open.
Josh Covey singled to load the bases again and then
Jimmy Norris, who was 3-for-5 with four RBI, doubled down the left field line two score two more runs.
Tim Cole followed with a ground ball to the pitcher, but an errant throw on a rundown trying to get Norris also brought in Covey.
Brandon George and
Nick Marti followed with RBI hits to finish the scoring at eight runs.
The Comets stretched it out in the 3rd with three more runs on three hits and another LETU error. After Norris drove in a run, the throw on an attempted line drive double play ball sailed past first base and Covey scored his second run. George (who finished 2-for-4 with three RBI) then drove in another run with a single through the left side.
LETU finally got on the board in the 4th on a leadoff home run from Rayne Hobbs home run. A UTD error and back-to-back wild pitches then opened the door to another Yellowjacket run on an RBI ground out.
UTD added two more in the 5th with a Covey walk and stolen base followed by a Norris double and sacrifice fly from George. UTD got its final run in the top of the 7th on a
Nick Marti (3-for-5) double and RBI single from Barati.
