Comet Women Keep Rolling, Hold Off UT-Tyler For 10th Straight Win

TYLER, TX (01.12.17) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team matched a school record with its 10th consecutive victory Thursday night as the Comets handled rival Texas-Tyler, 80-69, in American Southwest Conference play.

The Comets improved to 12-2 overall (7-0 ASC) with the victory and will look to set a new program record for consecutive victories Saturday afternoon when they visit LeTourneau. Game time is 1 p.m. in Longview.

Senior Micaela Gonzalez scored a team-high 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds as she led five Comets in double figures against the Patriots. Zavier Landry finished the night with 14 points, McKenzie Petty and Victoria Pena each added 11 points and Alyssa Crockett scored ten points.

The Comets grabbed an early lead, securing a 20-14 advantage at the end of the opening quarter. UTD added a free throw earlier in the second to extend its lead to seven points before the host Patriots scored 10 straight points to take a 24-21 lead and set up a back-and-forth finish to the first half. The Comets ended the UTT run with back-to-back Gonzalez buckets for what would be the second of six lead changes in the second quarter. Patriot Re'Elle Miller would hit a buzzer-beating jumper to knot the game, 37-37, at the break.

UTD scored the first four points of the second half and quickly grabbed its largest lead of the night so far, 52-43, on a Pena free throw with 5:21 left in the third quarter. The Patriots would claw back within two points late in the frame before the Comets took three-point advantage, 59-56, in the final period. The Comets grabbed their first double-digit lead of the night, 72-62, with 4:58 remaining on a Kayla Reinhart three-point play and led by as many as 15 points late in the game.

The Comets shot 50 percent or better for the third time this season, finishing the night 30-of-58 (51.7%) from the floor, and were 7-of-16 (43.8%) from three-point range. UTD pulled down double-digit offense rebounds for the 10th time this season, grabbing 10 offensive boards in the second half.

UTD's only other 10-game winning streak came during the 2014-15 season, propelling the Comets to their only trip to the NCAA Division III "Sweet 16".
