LONGVIEW, TX (01.14.17) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team got off to a hot start and never looked back as the Comets collected their school-record 11th straight win Saturday afternoon with a 79-47 victory over LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (13-2, 8-0 ASC) remained perfect in ASC play with Saturday's win and now have taken three-game lead in the East Division with eight conference games left to play. UTD will look for 12-in-a-row Monday afternoon when the Comets host Mary Hardin-Baylor to open a four-game home stand. Game time is 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
Micaela Gonzalez led the Comets with 21 points while
Kayla Reinhart had 16 points and
McKenzie Petty finished with 13 points as UTD shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) in the lop-sided win over the ASC East second-place YellowJackets. The Comets held LETU to just 31.7 percent from the field and forced 20 turnovers. The YellowJackets came into Saturday's contest ranked fourth in the ASC in scoring with 70.6 points per game.
The Comets jumped out to a 28-2 lead after the opening quarter, scoring 24 straight points to close the frame, to easily secure the record-breaking victory. UTD held the YellowJackets to just one first-quarter field goal while shooting better than 54 percent in the opening frame to set the tone. UTD never led by fewer than double digits in each of the three ensuing quarters. UTD went 8-for-17 (47.1%) from three-point range and out-rebounded the YellowJackets, 41-36.
UTD continues to dominate opponents defensively this season, holding a sixth opponent to 50 points or fewer in a contest. The Comets currently lead the ASC in scoring defensive, allowing just 52.6 points per outing.
