Caleb Banks matched a season high with 22 points and dished out eight assists as the UT Dallas men's basketball team upset East Texas Baptist Thursday night at home in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (4-13, 3-7 ASC) picked up just their third league win of the season as they snapped a four-game losing skid and will look to keep the momentum going Saturday afternoon when they host Louisiana College. Game time is 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
Banks, the reigning ASC East Player of the Week, hit 7-of-14 from the field, inclucing 3-of-4 three-pointers, and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line as he topped 20 points for the third time in four outings.
Kyle Coulter finished the night with 16 points and nine rebounds while
Dimitrius Underwood recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The visiting Tigers (11-5, 3-5 ASC) controlled the tempo of the game early as the two teams raced out to 9-9 tie in the first four minutes of the ball game. The Comets secured a one-point lead, 14-13, on a Coulter three-pointer with 14:12 left in the first half and held the lead throughout the period, taking a 34-31 lead into the locker room. ETBU would chip away at the lead early in the second half, taking a 40-39 lead on a Tyler Day three-pointer with 14:50 left to play, but the Comets answered with eight straight points by Banks to pull ahed 47-40 two minutes later.Â
ETBU knotted the game, 55-55, with 6:47 on the clock on a Jordan Quillian lay up but would never take back the lead as the Comets went 11-for-14 from the free throw line over the final five minutes to hold on the lead and seal the win.
The Comets ended the night shooting 42.6 percent from the field, topping 40 percent for the third straight game, and were 9-of-18 (50%) from three-point range. UTD finished 18-for-23 (78.3%) from the foul line and dominated the boards against ETBU, 43-31.
