RICHARDSON, TX (10.28.17) - Resting several players for the postseason, the UT Dallas men's soccer team still handled East Texas Baptist, 2-0, Saturday night in American Southwest Conference play to close out the regular season.
The Comets ended the regular season with a 10-5-2 overall record, topping double digits wins for the eighth consecutive fall. UTD closed out conference play with a 7-3-1 mark, good enough for the No. 3 seed in next week's ASC Tournament, hosted by Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton. The Comets will open the event at 8 p.m. Thursday against sixth-seeded Hardin-Simmons in the quarterfinals.
UTD got both goals Saturday early in the first half and held the Tigers to just five shots on goal in the contest.
Rodrigo Balmaceda notched the Comets' first tally, his first of the season, in the fifth minute, scoring after a cross from the right from teammate
Jude Anuwe.
Daaron McFarling then added his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 13th minute, thanks to a cross from
Jackson Huckaby.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Comets took just 10 shots, the second-fewest in a win this season, with a season-low two shots on goal. ETBUÂ had 24 total shots.
UTD posted its 10th shutout of the season and fifth in the past six outings.
KEY PERFORMERS
Balmaceda took a team-high three shots, while McFarling and
Jordan Henderson each took two shots. Starting keeper
John Nicknish made three saves in the opening half while
Max Dier and
Leon Tannenbaum each saw action in the second period. Tannenbaum made two saves.
