RICHARDSON, TX (02.16.17) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped Thursday night with a 71-64 home loss to East Division leader LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (10-14, 7-8 ASC) can still finish in second place in the ASC's East Division with a win in their regular-season finale against rival Texas-Tyler Saturday afternoon. Game time for "Senior Day" is 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
UTD point guard
Caleb Banks finished Thursday's game with seven assists, giving the junior 160 assists on the season to set the new program record. The previous Comet season record for assists (159) was set by Travis Carruthers in the 2005-06 season. Banks currently leads the ASC with 6.7 assists per game and is on pace to shatter the Comet career assists record, now only 13 shy of the mark of Carruthers (411, 2003-07).
The Comets took an early lead against LETU (19-5, 11-4 ASC), but it was not long-lived as the YellowJackets grabbed an 18-15 advantage with 13:27 left in the opening half on a three-pointer by Christian Seidl. UTD trailed the YellowJackets for more than 10 minutes before
Ben Smith would knot the game, 34-34, on a free throw with 2:44 on the clock. The Comets would trail LETU by just two points, 38-36, at the break.
UTD tied the game three more times early in the second half, but would go more than 10 minutes without a field goal as the YellowJackets began to pull away. The Comets' last tie came with 16:07 left to play, 44-44, after two
Dimitrius Underwood free throws, before LETUÂ rolled off seven straight points during UTD's field goal drought. The Comets would remain within striking distance, however, as Banks used back-to-back lay ups with just under six minutes left to draw UTD within two points, 53-51.
But, the YellowJackets answered with 9-1 run to snag their first double-digit lead of the night, 62-52, with 3:43 left and the Comets would not get closer than four points down the stretch.
The Comets shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the field, hitting 6-of-19 three-pointers (31.6%), but hit just 16-of-24 free throws (66.7%) in the contest. UTD hit just 8-of-29 shots (27.6%) during the second half, going 1-for-9 from three-point range in the final 20 minutes.
Underwood led the Comets with 18 points and eight rebounds while Banks had 16 points and
Jon Hatcher added 12 points.
Kyle Coulter also matched Underwood's game-high eight rebounds.
