RICHARDSON, TX (02.27.17) - The UT Dallas baseball team continued its torrid start to the season Monday afternoon with an 11-3 non-conference win over Southwestern University.
The Comets (10-1) are now hitting .367 as a team through 11 games and will take an eight-game winning streak into the start of American Southwest Conference play this weekend. UTD will open the league schedule with a three-game series at Ozarks, starting Friday in Clarksville, Ark.
UTD pounded out 16 hits with the top two hitters in the order going 8-for-9 with six RBI in the lop-sided victory. Lead-off hitter
Josh Covey matched the school record for hits, going 5-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI, while
Ryan Burciaga finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI, three of which came on his second home run of the season.
The Comets started the scoring in the 1st when Covey opened UTD's half of the inning with a single up the middle and came home ona  double by
Connor Scruggs. UTD doubled its lead in the 3rd when Covey singles, advanced to third on a double by Burciaga and scored on a error by the Southwestern leftfielder. The Comet then tacked on four runs in the 4th, which included Burciaga's homer, and added three more runs in the 7th and two in the 8th.
Cole Hanson (2-0) earned the win as he picked up three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work as the Comets' starter. Hanson allowed just three hits and gave up two earned runs. Drew Thomspon completed the 6th and finished with 2.1 innings on the hill, giving up an unearned run on one hits with two strikeouts.
Tyler Keegan tossed a scoreless 9th with two strikeouts.
