JACKSON, MS (02.04.17) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team won its fifth straight games as the Comets cruised to a 88-58 road victory over future Ameican Southwest Conference foe Balhaven Saturday afternoon.
The Comets (18-3) have now won 16 of their last 17 contests and will return to American Southwest Conference East Division play Thursday when they visit Louisiana College in the third of a four-game road swing for the squad. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Pineville, La.
UTD shot 51.6 percent (33-of-64) as a team with a pair of 20-point scorers as the Comets completed their season sweep of Belhaven.
Alyssa Crockett finished with a game-high 22 points while
Kayla Reinhart added 21 points as four Comets reached double figures.
Micaela Gonzalez added 16 points and
Victoria Pena finished with 10 points. Gonzalez led UTD with seven rebounds.
The Comets raced out to a commanding 28-14 lead in the first quarter, then broke the game open with a 30-point fourth period.
After falling behind 8-6 early, UTD took off on a 16-3 run over a four-minute span, taking a 22-11 lead on a Crockett free throw with 1:57 remaining. A
Katie Gunther layup to end the opening frame stretched the lead out to 14 points. The Blazers were able to claw back to within seven points (24-31) midway through the second quarter, but a
Kayla Reinhart layup at the buzzer finished off a 12-4 run to put the lead back at 15 points (43-28) at intermission. The Comets then opened the third quarter with six quick points to move the lead out to 50-28 at the 6:53 mark. Belhaven was never closer than 14 points again and UTD pulled away in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
The Comets took advantage of 16 Blazer turnovers, scoring 18 points off of them. UTD also nailed nine three-pointers in the game, holding Belhaven to 1-for-13 shooting beyond the arch and a 34.4 shooting percentage for the game.
