RICHARDSON, TX (03.31.17) - The No. 12-ranked UT Dallas baseball team used a first-inning grand slam by
Connor Scruggs and got a complete-game performance for starter
Jamie Andriot as the Comets cruised to a 12-1 win over McMurry Friday afternoon to open a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.
The Comets (19-4, 8-2 ASC) extended their winning streak to four games with Friday's victory and will look to keep rolling Saturday with a 12 p.m. with McMurry at the UTD Baseball Field.
After the Comets loaded the bases without a hit in the bottom of the 1st, Scruggs blasted his first home run of the season over the left field wall to give UTD a very quick 4-0 lead over the War Hawks. Scruggs would finish the game 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored, picking up a single and a double later in the contest.
UTD added a sacrifice fly to complete a five-run opening frame then plated three runs in both the 2nd and 4th innings to pull ahead 11-0. In the 2nd, UTD picked up an RBI single from Scruggs and a two-run single from
Mitch Barati to take an 8-0 advantage. In the 4th,
Barry Casey and Barati each collected RBI hits while UTD added a run on a wild pitch.
The Comets extended their lead to 12-0 with a sacrifice fly by Casey before the visiting War Hawks (10-16, 4-6 ASC) avoided the shutout with a two-out run in the 9th.
Recording his first complete game of the season, Andriot improved to 6-0 as he gave up just three hits with four strikeouts, needing 120 pitches. In total, the Comets collected 12 hits off of six McMurry pitchers with Barati and
Josh Covey each going 2-for-3.
