BELTON, TX (04.22.17) - The No. 14-ranked UT Dallas baseball team won its seventh straight American Southwest Conference series, taking 2-of-3 games over the weekend at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
After earning a 6-2 win over the Cru Friday night, UTD (28-9, 16-5 ASC) split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Comets dropped Saturday's opener, 2-1, but bounced back for a 16-7 victory in the series finale.
The Comets, currently in 3rd place in the ASC, will close the regular season next weekend with a three-game home series with Howard Payne. The two teams will play a single game at 2 p.m. Friday before squaring off in a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
GAME 1 - UMHB 2, UTD 1
The Comets had their five-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 loss at UMHB to open the doubleheader.
Ruben Renteria (8-1) was handed his first loss of the season after giving up just one earned run on four hits in a complete-game outing. Renteria struck out three and walked three in the defeat. UTD managed just four hits as well, off of two Cru pitchers.
UMHB opened the scoring in the 2nd on lead-off homer by Ty Johnson but the Comets would counter in the 4th with a RBI double by
Connor Scruggs, scoring
Isaiah Swann. However, UTD would leave the go-ahead run at third base. Mark Frankhouser led off the Cru half of the 5th with a double, moved to third on a failed pickoff and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
GAME 2 - UTD 16, UMHB 7
The Comets pounded out 20 hits as they rallied to take the series at UMHB with a 16-7 Saturday afternoon.
UTD jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with five runs in the 2nd and then scored 11 runs over the final five innings to hold off the Cru for the victory in the series finale.
The Comets opened the scoring with two outs in the 2nd when
Rodney Corbin plated
Luke Richter with an infield single. UTD would add an RBI single by Swann, a passed ball and a two-run single by Scruggs to take a 5-0 lead.
UMHB plated a run in the bottom of the frame and two more in the 3rd to cut the Comet lead to 5-3. UTD responded with three runs in the 5th on a
Edmundo Ojeda double, scoring Richter, followed by a Cru error on a Corbin ground ball, allowing
Michael Morton and Ojeda to come home.
The Comets then added four runs in the 7th and another run in the 8th to take a 13-3 lead. In the 7th, Corbin doubled in both Richter and Morton, before
Josh Covey brought home Ojeda with a sacrifice fly. Corbin later scored on a Casey single to center. In the 8th, the Comets scored on a Covey RBI single to right, scoring Morton.
The host Cru cut the lead to six runs in the bottom of the 8th, however, with four runs on just two hits, taking advantage of a Comet error and three walks.
Casey would open the 9th with his team-leading eighth home run of the season and UTD added two more runs an RBI single by Richter and a sacrifice fly by Ojeda.
Casey finished the game 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored while Morton was 3-for-4 and Richter and Ojeda both went 3-for-5. Scruggs was 2-for-4 while Corbin was 2-for-6 with three RBI.
Cole Hanson (4-1) earned the victory after giving up one earned run with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Hanson scattered 10 hits and issued one walk.
