Halliburton Walkoff Homer Sends Comets Into ASC Title Game

TYLER, TX (04.28.17) - Junior catcher Samantha Halliburton broke a 5-5 tie in walk off fashion Friday afternoon, launching a solo home run over the right field wall at UT Tyler's Suddenlink field that gave the UT Dallas softball team a 6-5 win over top-seeded Texas Tyler in the Winner's Bracket final of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, and sent the Comets to the ASC championship game for the first time in school history.

ASC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

UTD (35-8) will face UT Tyler, which fought back through two elimination games Friday and Saturday, in the title game, now set for 3 pm Saturday to avoid incoming weather. The Patriots would have to defeat the Comets twice to claim the title, so a second title game is set for 1 pm Sunday, if necessary.

Halliburton came to the plate with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning and had a 2-1 count before launching the game winner, her only hit of the afternoon. The 12th-ranked Comets had seen UT Tyler (38-3), ranked No. 2 in the nation, rally from an early  5-2 deficit to tie the game in the top of the 6th inning. The win broke a 44-game UTD losing streak against the Patriots.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the 1st, the Comets (who were the home team by virtue of a coin toss) took back control with a five-run bottom of the frame. Three of the first four UTD hitters drew walks to load the bases before Jessica Vlasek drove home Melissa Livermore with the first run before a throwing error on the Patriot pitcher allowed both Hope Griffith and pinch-runner Elizabeth Brann to score. Kendall Moore then delivered an RBI single to left that brought home Stefanie Polderman and Vlasek to give UTD a 5-2 edge.

The Patriots got single runs back in the 2nd and 4th innings before a leadoff triple in the 6th set the stage for the tying run.

Allie Stephens (9-2), the third UTD pitcher of the game, pitched out of a jam in the top of the 6th, then shut down the UTT offense in the 7th to pick up the win. Vlasek and Polderman each went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring a run.
