RICHARDSON, TX (04.07.17) - For the first time in program history, the UT Dallas softball team hit two grand slam home runs in the same contest as the No. 21-ranked Comets rallied for a 14-5, five-inning win over Concordia Texas Friday afternoon to open an three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.
The Comets (24-8, 16-6 ASC) will close the set with CTX Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at the UTD Softball Field. With two wins Saturday, the Comets would not only secure a berth into the 2017 ASC Tournament but also set a new program record for wins in a season. The current season record for wins is 25, set in 2004 and matched both in 2005 and last season.
Sophomore
Ravin Wilson and junior
Samantha Halliburton belted grand slams in the 4th and 5th innings, respectively, after the Comets fell behind CTX, 5-1, after giving up five unearned runs in the top of the 3rd frame. UTD recorded its first three home run game of the season as the Comets matched a season-high with 14 runs.
The Comets opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st after lead-off hitter
Melissa Livermore singled, advanced to second on a
Hope Griffith groundout, stole third and came home on a Halliburton groundout. However, CTX countered with five runs on three hits and costly error in the top of the 3rd. UTD got a run back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by
Brittany Perkins to cut the Tornado lead back to 5-2.
UTD led off its half of the 4th with a Tornado error on a
Jessica Vlasek ground ball and got a double by Perkins to put Comets on second and third. After a walk drawn by
Kendall Moore to load the bases, the Comets scored their first of seven runs in the 4th, all with no outs, on an infield single by
Heather Gilbert. Wilson then took the next pitch over the centerfield wall to give UTD a 7-5 advantage. The long ball was Wilson's second of the season and her first career grand slam. Two batters later, Griffith lifted UTD to a 9-5 lead with her third homer of the season, a two-run shot scoring Livermore.
The Comets opened a five-run 5th inning with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Gilbert, and ended the game with the grand slam by Halliburton, her fifth home run of the season and first career grand slam as well. The walk-off grand slam is the second such game-ending hit in program history and first since Apr. 2, 2011, when former Comet Natalie Duran ended a 9-5, nine-inning home victory over LeTourneau.
Lauren McLeod (14-1) gave up just three hits in the victory as she collected three strikeouts. Livermore finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Griffith,
Stefanie Polderman, Gilbert and Wilson were each 2-for-3 from the plate.
