No. 13 Comets Fall to ETBU, 11-7, in Red Bracket Final

RICHARDSON, TX (05.07.17) - The No. 13-ranked UT Dallas baseball team needed two wins Sunday to move on to next weekend's American Southwest Conference Championship Series, but could not secure the first victory as the Comets fell to East Texas Baptist, 11-7, in 10 innings in the ASC's Red Bracket Final at the UTD Baseball Field.

The Comets (33-11), ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA Division III West Region Rankings, will now have to wait and see if they have the resume to earn a second-ever trip to the NCAA D-III National Tournament at an at-large selection. The field for the national tournament will be unveiled at 11 p.m. (Central) on Sunday, May 21, on www.ncaa.com.

UTD took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the 8th on a single through the left side by Josh Covey, scoring Michael Morton from second base. However, the Comets would leave two runners base to end the frame, allowing the Tigers to come to bat in the 9th trailing by a single run. ETBU knotted the game on an RBI single by eventual Tournament MVP Casey Combs with two outs in the 9th to force extra innings and then used a grand slam by Zach Compton with two outs in the 10th seal the victory.

Isaiah Swann finished the afternoon 4-for-6 from the plate with two RBI while Covey was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. Morton, Connor Scruggs and Luke Richter each had two-hit performances.

The Tigers (30-13), which entered Sunday's game as the only unbeaten team in the tournament, plated four runs in the top of the 3rd on three hits and a UTD error. The Comets answered, however, with two runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the 4th to tie the contest, 4-4.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Rodney Corbin would score from first base on a Covey single to right, followed by a Tiger throwing error. Covey later scored in the frame on a Swann double to left, cutting the ETBU lead in half. In the 4th, UTD climbed within a run on a Morton sacrifice fly, scoring Scruggs, and evened the game when Richter scored on a Edmundo Ojeda single to center, followed by another Tiger throwing error.

ETBU answered with a single run in the top of the 5th to regain a 5-4 advantage, but the Comets plated two runs with two outs in the 6th to take their first lead of the afternoon. After singles by Corbin and Covey, followed by a wild pitch, Swann picked up another RBI and re-tied the contest, 5-5, with a single to left, scoring Corbin. Covey then gave the Comets back the lead when he scored on a failed pick off attempt of Swann at first base.

The Tigers again tied the game in the 7th, this time with a lead-off home run by Conner Combs.

UTD starter Michael Deacon did not factor into the decision as he tossed 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits with a strikeout. Drew Thompson pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits, with two strikeouts, before Tyler Keegan allowed just one run on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. Junior Escobar (0-1) was handed his first loss of the season, giving up the grand slam to Compton in the 10th.

Comets Covey, Morton and Richter, along with Cole Hanson, were named to the All-Tournament Team.
