LONGVIEW, TX (09.23.17) - The No. 16-ranked UT Dallas volleyball team finished the first of two American Southwest Conference Crossover Tournaments this season with a 2-1 record. This event was held on the campus of LeTourneau.
The Comets (11-4, 5-2 ASC) opened the event Friday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Sul Ross State and then quickly dispatched McMurry, 3-0, in less than an hour to close out the first day. UTD then had its five-match winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to West Division leader Mary Hardin-Baylor.
After 15 straight road matches to open the season, the Comets will play their first home contest of the fall Tuesday night when they host rival Texas-Tyler. Match time is 7 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
MATCH 1 - UTD 3, Sul Ross State 1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-9, 25-7)
The Comets hit .333 as a team and used eight services aces to earn a 3-1 win over Sul Ross State to open the ASC Crossover Tournament.
Emma Wallbrown and
Alana Geymer each finished with 12 kills while
Sydney Riordan and
Lauren Schilling each added nine kills. Wallbrown added five blocks while libero
Briana Tully ended the match with match-high 24 digs.
MATCH 2 - UTD 3, McMurry 0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-10)
UTD needed just 55 minutes to roll past McMurry in three sets to wrap up the first day at the crossover event.
Wallbrown again led the Comets, knocking down 11 kills and added five more blocks.
Jillian Via, who had seven kills earlier in the day against SRSU, added nine kills and eight digs in the quick victory.
Caroline Shecterle finished with 18 assists (6.0 per set) while Tully needed just 10 digs to lead all players. The Comets hit .217 as a team.
MATCH 3 - Mary Hardin-Baylor 3, UTD 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22)
The Comets hit just .084 as a team as they were handed their second ASC loss of the season, falling to West Division Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-0.
Riordan led the Comets with 10 kills while Wallbrown had eight kills in the defeat. Schilling finished with a match-high seven blocks.
