Freshmen Lead Way To 3-0 Whitewash of Howard Payne

RICHARDSON, TEXAS (09.30.17) - Newcomers Jackson Huckaby and Jesse Ardila both scored their first collegiate goals Saturday night as the UTD Comets shut out Howard Payne, 3-0, for their fourth straight American Southwest Conference win.

The Comets (6-3, 4-1 ASC) took care of the Yellowjackets, dominating the offense with a 13-5 shot advantage to give freshman goalkeeper John Nicknish his first career victory with the shutout. HPU fell to 4-4, 2-3 ASC on the season.

Sophomore Alfredo Kaegi got the Comets on the board early, taking a pass from Ardila down the left side and firing a shot past a diving Andrew Hackney in the 15th minute.

Huckaby made it 2-0 in the 31st minute, chipping a ball off a long feed from Isaac Urcuyo over the head of Hackney, who had come out from the net to stop the charge. Ardilia got the only goal of the second half, firing a rebound of an attempted clear on a diagonal for the final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: UTD did not allow a shot from the Yellowjackets in the first 45 minutes, taking a 5-0 shot advantage to intermission. At that point, the Comets had put three of those five shots on net, slipping two in for scores.

KEY PLAYERS: Daaron McFarling led UTD with three shots, while Ardila and Huckaby both tallied two shots. Nicknish had to make just two saves to pick up his first win.

UP NEXT: The Comets open a tough stretch next weekend on the road with a Thursday match at Concordia Texas and a Saturday tilt at currently undefeated Mary Hardin-Baylor. Both matches are at 7:30 p.m. UTD's next home match is Thursday, Oct. 12, against rival Hardin-Simmons.
