AUSTIN, TX (01.22.18) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team used a late run to pull ahead of Concordia Texas Monday night and then held off the Tornados for a 101-100 road win in American Southwest Conference crossover play.
With the game tied, 87-87, with just over six minutes to play, the Comets got back-to-back three-pointers from
Xavier Ferrell and
Dimitrius Underwood to spark a 10-0 run to take control of the game. However, the host Tornados scored the final six points of the contest to claw back within a point with 40 seconds to play, after a three-pointer by Ephriam Price.
The Comets turned over the ball on their next possession due to a shot clock violation, but CTX's game-winning shot attempt by Joe Noel fell off target in the final seconds.
UTD had taken a 59-56 lead at the break after an explosive opening half, but the Tornados knotted the game with a three-pointer from Price just nine seconds into the second half. After trading leads, the Comets took back the lead, 70-68, with 14:37 remaining on a trey by
Jon Hatcher. The two teams then battled to four more ties in the half, the final coming at 87 with 6:26 left on the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Comets finished the game shooting 53.4 percent from the field, connecting on 31-of-58 shots, and hit 8-of-17 three-pointers (47.1%) as they topped 100 points for the second time this season. UTD was 31-of-40 (77.5%) from the free-throw line, both season highs.
CTX hit 32-of-70 shots (45.7%), hitting 13-of-25 (52%) three-pointers, and were 23-of-30 (76.7%) from the line. The two teams combined for 54 fouls and 70 free-throw attempts.
KEY PERFORMERS
Underwood finished with a team-high 20 points and a season-best 17 rebounds, sparking six Comets in double-digit scoring. Underwood was 7-for-17 from the field, hitting 1-of-3 treys, and went 5-for-9 from the line.
Caleb Banks scored 19 points and added seven assists while Hatcher and
Hans Burwitz each had 17 points.
Reagan Keogh and
Curtis Allen each contributed 10 points.
NEXT GAME
The Comets will look for a third consecutive win Thursday night when they host Belhaven in the squad's return to ASC East play. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
