No. 2-Seeded Comets Survive ETBU in ASC Quarterfinals

RICHARDSON, TX (10.30.18) - It took 75 minutes before the No. 2-seeded UT Dallas women's soccer team could find goal, but the Comets scored twice in the final 16 minutes to pull away for a 2-0 home win over No. 7 seed East Texas Baptist Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament.

ASC WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

The Comets improved to 16-1-1 overall, matching the program record for victories in a season, and will meet up with third-seeded Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday at 8 p.m. in the tournament's round of four, held on the campus of top-seeded Hardin-Simmons in Abilene. UMHB dispatched sixth-seeded Concordia Texas, 2-0, in Belton Tuesday night in the Cru's opening-round contest.

Freshman Sofia Munoz broke open a scoreless game with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation as she danced through the ETBU backfield before striking a shot past Tiger keeper Claire Montondon. The tally was Munoz' eighth of the season. UTD added a late insurance goal in the 86th minute when Keely Fillman also recorded her eighth tally of the fall when she drilled a ball into the net after a far right cross from teammate Bailee Davis.

The Comets finished the victory with 23 shots, 16 of which came in the opening half, while managing 11 shots on frame. Munoz and Jessica Rusk each took four shots while Fillman and Davis had three shots apiece. Keeper Monica Dallacasa was forced to make just three saves in the Comets' 14th shutout of the season, one shy of the school record, as the UTD defense limited the Tigers to just five shots, three on goal.

UTD will be heading to the semifinal round of the ASC Tournament for the 17th straight season and will be playing for a trip to their 10th-ever conference title game when they meet the Cru in the semifinals. UTD edged UMHB, 1-0, in their regular season matchup in Richardson earlier this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Munoz ended the scoring drought in the 75th minute with an unassisted from about 10 yards out.
