SHERMAN, TX (11.24.18) - The No. 14-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season Saturday afternoon as the Comets dropped a 60-57 decision at in-region rival Austin College in non-conference play.
The Comets (3-1) shot just 38.3 percent from the field the loss, connecting on just 6-of-22 three-point shots as a team in their fourth consecutive road game to open the new year. UTD will look to bounce back Thursday when the Comets open American Southwest Conference play at Sul Ross State. Game time is 5:30 p.m. as UTD continues its six-game road trip to open the season.
Raenett Hughes led the Comets with 19 points, hitting 8-of-15 shots, while adding six rebounds and a pair of assists.
Katie Gunther was only other UTD player to reach double figures, scoring 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting with three boards.
The Comets fell behind early as host Austin College snagged a 21-14 advantage after the opening period. The 'Roos maintained their seven-point lead at the intermission, leading UTD, 31-24, at the break.
UTD opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run to claw within two points, 31-29, with 6:40 left in the period after an
Amber Terry free throw. After the 'Roos again extended their lead back to seven points, Terry drained a three-pointer in the final seconds of the period to draw UTD with four points, 40-36, heading into the final quarter.
The Comets would climb within a point, 45-44, with 6:24 left to play after a Hughes jumper and remain in striking distance over the next three minutes before Hughes gave UTD its first lead since the opening quarter, 51-50, with just over there minutes on the clock.
The 'Roos, however, answered on their next possession with a lay up by Bryce Frank and AC held the Comets to just one field goal over the final there minutes of the contest.
