BELTON, TX (11.03.18) - The UT Dallas volleyball team had its stretch of three-straight American Southwest Conference championships come to an end Saturday afternoon after a 3-2 loss to No. 23-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor in the league's title match.
The Comets dropped to 23-10 overall after Saturday's defeat and will now wait to see if they will qualify for the NCAA Division III National Tournament as an at-large selection. The NCAA D-III Volleyball selection show will take place at 11:30 a.m. (Monday) at www.ncaa.com.
UTD got a season-high 20 kills from freshman
Allison Owen while
Lauren Schilling added 16 kills and
Dylan Brinkman finished with 10 kills in the exciting five-set loss to the Cru. The Comets found themselves just five points shy of forcing the "if necessary" match, leading UMHB, 10-8, in the fifth set, but the Cru rallied for a 7-3 run to end the contest.
After dropping the opening set, 25-17, the Comets responded with a 25-18 victory in the second set, hitting a match-best .283 as a team with an impressive 24 digs. However, the Cru answered with a 25-20 win in the third set to grab a 2-1 advantage. Down 21-20 in the fourth set, the Comets would battle back with three late kills from
Sydney Riordan to secure a 25-22 victory and force a fifth stanza.
The Comets held a 10-7 lead in the fifth set after a UMHB error, but the Cru used kills from Hope Hoelscher and Corrine Novak, followed by UTD hitting error to knot the set, 10-10. Ater the two teams traded points to even the set again, the Cru took their first two-point lead of the set, 13-11. Owen had the Comets' finale two kills but UTD could not recover the lead and complete the upset.
At the conclusion of the tournament, two members of the UTD squad were listed on the All-Tournament as Schilling and Comet setter
Caroline Shecterle were recognized for their performances.
The Comets made its ninth all-time appearance in the ASC title match, playing in the last five championships contests.
