RICHARDSON, TX (11.04.18) - Playing a man down, the UT Dallas men's soccer team gave up the only goal of the afternoon in the 71st minute as the top-seeded Comets were handed a 1-0 loss by Mary Hardin-Baylor in the American Southwest Conference Tournament title match Sunday afternoon.
With the Comets have a player ejected for a second yellow card, UMHBÂ took advantage with a header by Steven Dang on the ensuing free kick from the right side by teammate Rolando Nieto. Dang would go on to be named the Most Valuable Player of the ASC Tournament after his game-winning tally.
The Comets (13-3-2) managed just eight shots on the afternoon, the second-lowest total of the season, with a season-low one shot on frame. The visiting Cru (15-3-1) finished with 14 shots, four on goal.
UTD keeper
Chase Therrien, who was one of three Comets listed on the All-Tournament, made three saves in the contest, two of which coming in the second half.
Jordan Henderson, who was also named All-Tournament, and
Robin Mainah each took two shots.
Jesse Ardila was the Comets' final selection to the All-Tournament Team.
Neither team took a shot until the 15th minute of the contest and the Comets did not manage their first shot attempt until the 21st minute. UTD took just four shots in the opening half, including the Comets' lone shot on frame coming from Henderson. After going down a man, the Comets managed just one shot, that coming from
Merek Byckovski in the 84th minute.
Joining UMHB's Dang on the All-Tournament Team were teammates Tyler Childs, Seth Neveloff and Caleb Vandergriff. East Texas Baptist's Bryant Botello and Daniel Rutter along with Concordia Texas' Omar Aguirre and Rob Oakley filled out the All-Tournament Team from the two semifinal teams.
The Comets will now wait to see if they pick up an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The men's soccer selection show is scheduled for 12 p.m. (Central), Monday, Nov. 5, at www.ncaa.com.
