BROWNWOOD, TX (12.01.18) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team simply couldn't get the shots to fall Saturday afternoon in the Brownwood Coliseum, resulting in a 69-65 upset loss to the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets in American Southwest Conference play.
UTD (now 6-2, 2-1 ASC) shot just 36.5 percent from the field, hitting only 23-of-63 shots, and did not score over the final 3:05 of the contest as HPU (2-6, 1-0) pulled out a win for only the second time this season, hitting five clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. UTD meanwhile came up empty on its final seven trips down the floor, missing four shots and turning the ball over three times.
The Comets, who entered the game perfect in ASC play, will play their first conference home game of the season this weekend when they host Concordia Texas on Thursday night, then the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon.
Dimitrius Underwood scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, leading a charge back from a 37-32 halftime deficit. After UTD shot just 33.0 percent from the floor in the first half, Underwood led the Comets on a 23-14 start to the second period as the team hit 9-of-13 shots to start the period to go up 55-51 after an Underwood steal, layup and three free throws eight minutes in. But the Yellow Jackets answered with a 10-2 run of their own, during which Underwood picked up his fourth foul at the 9:24 mark and had to head to the bench. A
Michael Forster layup at 6:40 tied the score for the last time at 61-61, but the Comets only regained the lead once more (65-64) when Underwood returned and hit a free throw for UTD's final points with 3:05. He fouled out on a charging call with :45 remaining and the Comets down by one.
Officials whistled a combined 43 fouls in the contest, but the two teams were a combined 28-of-48 at the free throw line. UTD, which won the rebounding battle 47-35, was charged with 17 turnovers while forcing the Yellow Jackets into 13. HPU shot over 41 percent from the field.
Curtis Allen, who scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, who kept the Comets in the game early. Forster finished with 14 points.
