BROWNWOOD, TX (12.01.18) - Four Comets scored in double figures as the No 17-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team earned a 73-58 road win over Howard Payne Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets improved to 5-1 overall after Saturday's victory and are now 2-0 in ASC play after a pair of crossover victories this week, both on the road. After six straight road games to open the season, UTD will final play at home Thursday when the Comets host Concordia Texas. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.at the UTD Activity Center.
Sophomore
Raenett Hughes finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs, for her second career 'double-double', adding six assists and a pair of steals.
Natalie Miller added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting while
Katie Gunther had 12 points and
Alexa Boushey contributed 11 points.
The Comets shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66)Â from the field as a team and hit just 2-of-13 three-pointers (15.4%) in the victory. Defensively, however, UTD limited the host Yellow Jackets to just 35.6 percent accuracy and held HPU to 8.3 percent (1-of-12) shooting from three-point range while forcing 15 turnovers.
UTD jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over the host Yellow Jackets just 80 seconds into the contest and never looked back, securing a 33-21 lead at the half. HPU clawed within six points, 44-38, late in third period, but the Comets answered with back-to-back buckets from
Victoria Pena and
Kelley Skinner to regain a double-digit cushion and pull away for the 15-point victory.
