TUCSON, AZ (02.10.18) - The No. 22-ranked UT Dallas baseball team was handed its third straight loss to open the 2018 season on Saturday after suffering a 9-8, 10-inning defeat against Redlands as part of the Cactus Classic.
The Comets (0-3) will wrap up the event Sunday when they square off with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before heading home. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
After falling in an early 2-0 hole, the Comets got a two-run home run from
Connor Scruggs and an RBI triple by
Luke Richter to grab a 3-2 advantage in the 4th inning. UTD then added three runs, including a two-run single by
Rodney Corbin, in the 5th to extend its lead to 6-2.
However, Redlands answered with five runs on five hits in the top of the 6th frame to regain a 7-6 lead. UTD knotted the contest in the bottom of the inning an RBI single by
Barry Casey and regained a one-run lead, 8-7, in the 7th thanks to a solo homer from Richter.
But, the Bulldogs took advantage of a costly UTD error in the top of the 8th to knot the game, 8-8, and scored the game-winner in the top of the 10th, using a lead-off double and back-to-back sacrifice bunts.
Thomas Craig finished the game 3-for-5 while Casey was 3-for-6. Casey, Scruggs, Richter and Corbin each had two RBI.
