CONWAY, AR (02.17.18) - The No. 22-ranked UT Dallas baseball team kicked off its second weekend of the season with a pair of victories. The Comets opened Saturday with a 3-2 win over host Hendrix and then downed Washington-St. Louis, 7-3.
The Comes (3-4) will wrap up the weekend at 11 a.m. Sunday in a second game against Washington-St. Louis.
GAME 1 - UTD 3, HENDRIX 2
UTD grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th with back-to-back RBI hits by
Thomas Craig and
Garrett Uhl. Craig's single to centerfield brought home
Connor Scruggs from second base while Uhl's double to right plated
Luke Richter.
Hendrix (0-4) answered with two runs in the bottom of the 5th, but Uhl would give the Comets the game-winning run in the 6th with a sac fly to left, scoring Scruggs.
Jamie Andriot (1-1) picked up the win, scattering eight hits in 6.0 innings of work with two strikeouts.
Garrett Hale earned his first save as a Comet, collecting two strikeouts in a scoreless 9th.
The Comets managed just six hits off of two Hendrix pitchers with Uhl going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
GAME 2 - UTD 7, WASHINGTON-ST. LOUIS 3
The Comets used a late rally to pick up their second win of the day, scoring six runs in the final three innings of the 7-3 victory.
Down 3-1 heading to the 7th, the Comets drew within a run in the top of the frame thanks to a
Barry Casey double to right, scoring
Ryan Burciaga. UTD then took their first lead of the game in the 8th thanks to an BI single by
Peyton Becker, scoring
Luke Richter, followed by a Bear wild pitch. The Comets then scored another run on a wild pitch with two outs in the 9th and finished the scoring with a two-run double by Richter.
Michael Deacon (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Comet starter
Ruben Renteria while Hale earned his second save of the day, tossing the final 1.1 innings.
UTD belted 12 hits off of three Wash U. pitchers while Burciaga and Richter each collecting three-hit performances.
