RICHARDSON, TX (02.26.18) - The No. 22-ranked UT Dallas baseball team got another solid outing from a senior starter and belted 16 hits as the Comets rolled to a 14-0, seven-inning victory over Belhaven Monday afternoon to complete a sweep of a three-game American Southwest Conference series with the Blazers.
The Comets (7-4) have now won seven straight and are 3-0 after the first weekend of ASC play. Belhaven fell to 2-7 and 0-3 in the ASC.
Senior
Cole Hanson (2-0) tossed a complete-game shutout for the Comets, striking out five without a walk in Monday's lop-sided victory. Hanson needed just 84 pitches to earn his second victory of the season, giving up just three hits to the Blazers.
Offensively,
Rodney Corbin had the hot bat for the Comets as he opened the game with four straight hits from the lead-off spot, collecting two singles and two doubles through the first four innings of play. He finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Thomas Craig was 3-for-3 with four runs scored while
Mathew Deacon finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.
The Comets batted around in the opening frame, scoring four runs on five hits to take a quick 4-0 lead.
Barry Casey opened the scoring with a one-out single to left, scoring Corbin, and later scored on a Craig single to center. Deacon then added a two-run single up the middle to stake UTD to four-run cushion.
UTD added a run in the 2nd on a
Connor Scruggs ground out and added two more in the 3rd on RBI singles by Deacon and
Ryan Burciaga. The Comets tacked on three in the 4th and four more in the 5th to complete the scoring. In the 4th, UTD picked up a run on a Blazer wild pitcher, another on a Jarrod Beggiana ground out and the final run on a Corbin double. In the 5th, the Comets scored a run on a BU error and finished with RBI singles by Deacon, Beggiani and Casey.
NEXT GAME
The Comets have postponed their Tuesday game with Southwestern due to impending inclement weather. That non-conference single game has been moved to Tuesday, March 27, at 3 p.m.
UTD will hit the road this weekend for a three-game ASC series at Louisiana College. The two teams will open play with a single game Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Pineville, La.
