Comets Hold Off Louisiana College, 5-3, in Series Opener

RICHARDSON, TX (03.05.18) -  Leading by four runs heading to the 7th inning, the UT Dallas softball team was able to hold on for a 5-3 win over Louisiana College Monday night to open an American Southwest Conference three-game series with the Wildcats.

The Comets (4-2, 4-0 ASC) rolled off their fourth straight win to open league play and will look to keep rolling Tuesday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader with LC at the UTD Softball Field to close out the set. With the loss, the Wildcats fell to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in ASC play.

UTD struck quickly to open the scoring as Melissa Livermore led off the Comets' half of the 1st with a bunt single, stole second and came around an Emily Schroeder single to center. The Comets then plated two more runs in the 2nd thanks to an RBI triple by Kendra Litchfield, followed by an RBI single by Livermore. UTD would then extend their lead to 4-0 in the 3rd with a Samantha Halliburton single down the left field line, scoring Stefanie Polderman from second base.

The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the 5th when Taylor Hammock led off the frame with a double to the wall and pinch runner Shea Smith later came home on a bases-loaded pinch-hit double by Kaitlyn Moore. However, LC would leave the bases loaded as relief pitcher Allie Stephens struck out back-to-back hitters to close the inning.

The Comets would get the run back in the bottom of the 6th with a solo home run by Amber Williams, her first of the season, before the Wildcats mounted one final rally. LC loaded the bases without an out after two walks and a single to left. UTD would get an out at home on the nex batter after bunt before Mattie Stine plated a pair on a ground ball up the middle. Thanks to a base-running miscue by the Wildcats, the Comets were able to get the second out and the game then ended on a pop up in foul territory.

Karen Crane (3-0) started and finished the game as she tossed 5.0 total innings of work. Crane pitched into the 4th and left the game after Hammock's double. Stephens took over and tossed two scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Blaire Evans took over the circle in the 7th, but issued to walks before making an early exit. Crane then re-entered to get the final three outs.

Livermore was 2-for-3 from the lead-off spot with an RBI, run scored and two stolen bases. The Comets collectively stole six bases in the contest.
