Comets Sweep Southwestern in Midweek Doubleheader

GEORGETOWN, TX (04.10.18) - The UT Dallas baseball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern, claiming 13-9 and 12-4 victories.

GAME 1 - UTD 13, SU 9
The Comets scored five runs on six consecutive two-out singles in the top of the 7th inning to rally for a 13-9 victory over Southwestern to open Tuesday's twin bill.

Down 9-8 entering the final frame, the Comets' got an inning-opening single from Rodney Corbin but quickly suffered two quick outs. Dylan Palmer then stepped up and tied the game, 9-9, with a single to right, scoring Corbin from second base. Two batters later with runners on the corners, Ryan Burciaga gave UTD the lead with a single to right, scoring Palmer. The Comets then added RBI singles by Barry Casey, Connor Scruggs and Luke Richter to complete the five-run inning.

The Comets opened the scoring in the top of the 1st with a two-run single by Richter followed by a sac fly by Corbin to grab an early 3-0 advantage. However, the host Pirates countered with two runs in the bottom of inning and another run in the 3rd to knot the game, 3-3.

UTD regained the lead in the top of the 4th on an RBI single by Matt Mikusek, scoring Thomas Craig, but Southwestern responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to snag an 8-4 lead.

The Comets plated four runs in the top of the 5th on four hits to tie the contest, 8-8, but SU went back ahead in the bottom of the inning with a single run.

Michael Deacon (2-1) earned the win as one of three relievers of Comet starter Drew Thompson. Thompson tossed the first 3.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Josiah Rohne tossed the 4th, giving up five runs, before Deacon pitched the 5th and 6th frames, giving up one run on two hits. Garrett Hale tossed a scoreless 7th with a strikeout.

Casey finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI as one of five Comets with multi-hit games. Richter was 2-for-4 with four RBI while Burciaga was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

GAME 2 - UTD 12, SU 4
The Comets used another big inning, scoring seven runs in the top of the 6th, to pull away for a 12-4 win over Southwestern to close the doubleheader.

Up 5-4 after five innings, the Comets sent 11 batters to the plate in the 6th, collecting just five hits. As part of the barrage, UTD used a two-run single by Corbin and a bases-clearing double by Casey.

UTD struck first in the top of the 1st with a sac fly by Scruggs, scoring lead-off hitter Covey, but the Pirates answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Comets would take the lead for good in the 2nd with three runs, including an RBI single by Casey.  UTD added a sac fly from Palmer in the 4th to extend its lead to 5-1 before the Pirates plated one run in the bottom of the 4th and two more in the 5th.

Logan McPherson (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, tossing 3.0 innings of relief of Comet starter Tyler Keegan. Keegan pitched the opening frame, giving up one run on one hit with two strikeouts. McPherson struck out three batters while allowing an unearned run on two hits. Tristan DerMargosian, Jose Escobar Jr. and Hale each tossed an inning to complete the game.

Casey finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBI while Corbin was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.

NEXT GAME
The Comets (18-13) return to the field this weekend for a three-game American Southwest Conference home series with Mary Hardin-Baylor. The two teams will play a 2 p.m. single game Friday before a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
