RICHARDSON, TX (04.14.18) - The UT Dallas baseball team scored 38 runs on 43 hits Saturday as the Comets rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Mary Hardin-Baylor to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series with the Cru.
The Comets (20-13, 12-5 ASC) opened the series with UMHB with a 20-9 victory before closing Saturday's twin bill with an 18-9 win. The two teams will close out the set with an 11 a.m. single game on Sunday at the UTD Baseball Field.
GAME 1 - UTD 20, UMHB 9
The Comets pounded out 22 hits in the series opener with UMBH en route to a lop-sided 20-9 victory over the Cru.
Trailing 3-0 after the opening inning, the Comets scored four runs in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd to grab a 6-3 lead and take control of the contest. UTD added eight runs in the 4th, five in the 5th and a final run in the 6th.
All nine starters for the Comets recorded at least one hit and scored at least one run in the win. Seven UTD players had multi-hit performances with
Barry Casey leading the pack going 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Thomas Craig was 3-for-5 in the contest, also with five RBI and three runs scored.
The Comets got on the board in the 2nd with a two-run single by Craig and added two more runs on a Casey single. Craig collected another RBI in the 3rd with a single up the middle before the Comets snagged a 6-3 lead with a
Josh Covey single three batters later.
UTD then picked up eight runs on eight hits plus a Cru error in the 4th, sending 14 batters to the plate and leaving the bases loaded. During the big inning, the Comets got a pair of two-run homers from Craig and Covey.
In the Comets' five-run 5th, Casey blasted his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot right center.
UTD starter
Jamie Andriot (7-2) picked up the win after giving up six runs on 12 hits in 6.0 innings of work. Andriot struck out six while issuing one walk.
GAME 2 - UTD 18, UMHB 9
The Comets scored three runs in the bottom of the 1st and never looked back as they earned an 18-9 win over UMHB in the Saturday's second game, using a season-high 23 hits in the victory.
Again, all nine UTD starters picked up at least one hit while eight of Comets scored at least one run and had an RBI.
Matt Mikusek was 4-for4 from the nine-hole with four runs scored and two RBI while
Ryan Burciaga was 4-for-5 from the plate with five RBI and three runs scored, including his third home run of the season.
Burciaga opened the scoring two batters into the bottom of the 1st as he belted a two-run homer to left. The Comets added an RBI single from
Luke Richter in the 1st to grab a 3-0 lead. Casey and Richter then collected RBI in the 2nd an Covey picked up an RBI double in the 3rd to lift the Comets to a 6-0 cushion.
The Comets would add an RBI single by Craig in the 4th, four runs on four hits in the 5th, and an RBI double by Burciaga in the 6th to secure a 12-6 lead. UTD added two runs in the 7th and four final runs in the 8th to complete the 38-run doubleheader.
Ruben Renteria (4-3) picked up the win after allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits in 7.2 innings of work. He struck out five with two walks.
