Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Williams' Late Tally Pushes Comets Past Belhaven, 2-1

RICHARDSON, TX (10.24.19) - Battling a wet and messy pitch, the UT Dallas men's soccer team held strong in the chase for the American Southwest Conference regular-season title with a 2-1 home win over Belhaven Thursday night.

Senior Hunter Williams knocked the game-winner in the 88th minute as he drilled home a deflection of a Gage Ott free kick that came from just outside the penalty area. William's second tally of the season was made more dramatic after the visiting Blazers tied the contest, 1-1, with penalty kick in the 81st minute after UTD handball in the box.

Raining throughout the contest, the downpour intensified at the half and both teams had to deal with standing water on the field over the final 45 minutes. UTD held a 1-0 lead at the break after a diving header by Jovi Munoz in the 25th minute, thanks to a cross from the right by teammate Alfredo Kaegi. The tally was Munoz' ASC-leading 11th of the season.

The Comets (now 12-3-2, 6-1-2 ASC) now sit in third place in the ASC with 20 points, with just two games left to play in the regular season. UTD is a mere two points shy of league-leader Concordia Texas (22 points) and the Comets' opponent in the regular-season finale next Friday, Ozarks, is second with 21 points. Two teams, Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin-Baylor, are tied for fourth with 18 points, both with an extra game to play.

UTD closed the victory with 15 shots, eight of which were on target. Munoz led the charge with three shots while Jardel Kuate took two shots. Ten other Comets each took a single shot. UTD keeper John Nicknish made four saves in a full 90-minute performance.

The Comets will close out the home portion of the regular season Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Louisiana College for Senior Day.
