The Comets have now set a program record for wins in a season as they will head into the NCAA Division III National Championship with a 17-3-2 overall record. This is UTD's fifth all-time ASC Tournament title and third time in program history the Comets claimed both the league's regular-season and postseason crowns. The Comets will learn at 12:30 p.m. Monday who they will play and where they will open the NCAA D-III Championship next weekend.
Munoz picked his second goal of the tournament and 15th of the season in the 71st minute he found the back of the net after a saved shot by teammate
Micah Ardila. That would be all the offense needed for Comet keeper
John Nicknish as he made four saves in his school-record-tying 10th shutout of the season.
UTD keeper John Nicknish kept the Comets
in the game with a first-half save.
The second-seeded Tornados (11-6-4) out-shot UTD, 5-4, in the opening half, but the two teams would fight to a 0-0 tie at the break. The Comets had the wind at their back for the second 45 minutes and took nine shots in the second half, compared to just four by CTX. UTD closed the win with just three shots on goal, the second-lowest total by the squad this fall. Munoz led the charge with four shots while
Brandon Bohn took three shots and
Mason Anderson had two shots.
Munoz was joined on the ASC All-Tournament team by teammates Anderson,
Brad Rivenes and
Alfredo Kaegi. Anderson and Kaegi each scored in Comets' 2-0 quarterfinal win over LeTourneau Tuesday while Munoz had the overtime game-winner Friday in UTD's 2-1 semifinal win over Ozarks.
