Jovi Munoz found teh back of the net three minutes into overtime to lift the No. 24-ranked UT Dallas men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Ozarks Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, hosted by the Comets at the UTD Soccer Field.
ASC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
Despite a 26-6 shot advantage for the contest, it took the top-seeded Comets extra time to advance to the ASC title game for thd second straight season and 12th time in program history. The Comets, which have now tied a single-season record wins, now at 16-3-2, will vie for a fifth all-time conference title at 1 p.m., against an opponent yet to be determined.
Just as in the regular-season finale between the two squads, the Comets got an early tally to snag a quick 1-0 advantage. This time it was was senior
Jordan Henderson would gave UTD a 1-0 lead in the third minute as he was on the receiving end of an
Alfredo Kaegi free kick from just outside the box. The tally was Henderson's fifth of the season while Kaegi collected his fifth assist of the fall.
However, unlike the last meeting, Ozarks countered just 41 seconds later with a penalty kick by Drew Mott. The Eagles earned the free shot after Jackson Rogers was taken down near the end line, just inside the box.Â
The Comets out-shot Ozarks, 18-2, over the first 45 minutes, taking nine corner kicks, but could not take advantage of those opportunities. UTD would take just six fruitless shots in the second half, compared to four by the Eagles, sending the game to overtime.Â
UTD would end the game in the 93rd minute when
Adrian Vasquez sent ball into the box from midfield, which was redirected to Munoz from
Mason Anderson. Munoz' goal was his ASC-leading 14th of the season.
