MARSHALL, TX (02.16.19) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season Saturday afternoon with an 81-67 road win over East Texas Baptist in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets will sport a 21-4 overall heading into the ASC Tournament, to be held at the UTD Activity Center, starting Thursday, while serving as the top seed from the ASC East with a 13-3 league mark. UTD will kickoff the postseason Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when the Comets host McMurry in a first-round contest.
Jalen Weber led all scorers with 25 points while
Michael Forster was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field for a career-best 22 points as the Comets shot 50 percent from the field as a team for the fifth consecutive game and 12th time this season.
Hans Burwitz rounded out the Comets in double digits, adding 12 points, while
Dimitrius Underwood pitched in nine points and snagged a game-high nine rebounds. Underwood also led the Comets with four assists and three steals.
The two divisional foes traded leads seven times throughout the opening half with the host Tigers securing a slim two-point cushion, 34-32, at the break as UTD shot just 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the floor over the first 20 minutes.
The Comets heated up in the second half, however, shooting 60 percent (15-of-25), hitting 6-of-9 three-pointers, to pull away for their sixth consecutive win. UTD has now won 14 of its last 15 games to head into the playoffs.
Curtis Allen gave the Comets back the lead, 37-36, with a trey with 17:45 left to play, but it would take until the 13:48 mark of the second half before UTD would grab the lead for good.
Kelden Pruitt hit the first of two free throws to lift the Comets to a 47-46 advantage, a free-throw that would ignite an 9-0 run by UTD.Â
The Comets found a double-digit lead for the first time of the contest with just under five to play when Forster used a put back to lift UTD to a 68-57 advantage. The Comes would lead by as many as 20 points before setting for the 14-point victory.
UTD closed the game shooting exactly 50 pecent (27-of-54) and hit 8-of-20 three-pointers (40%) while shooting 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free-throw line. The Comets out-rebounded ETBU, 38-26, and forced 15 Tiger turnovers.
