RICHARDSON, TX (02.21.19) - After nearly two hours of delay to get the field ready for play, the UT Dallas softball team split a doubleheader with Sul Ross State Thursday evening to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series.
The Comets (3-3, 2-3 ASC) led off the twin bill with an 8-4 loss to SRSU, but rallied for a 9-1, five-inning victory over the Lobos in the night cap. The two teams will close out the set with the final game at 11 a.m. Friday at the UTD Softball Field.
GAME 1 - SRSU 8, UTD 4
The Comets managed just five hits off SRSU ace Jodie Vaughn as UTD fell in Thursday's opener, 8-4.
UTD rallied late, however, bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 7th before the game would come to a close. The visiting Lobos jumped out ot a 4-0 lead by the 5th inning before UTD dented the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run blast by
Ravin Wilson, her first of the season.
The Lobos added four runs in the top of the 7th to pull ahead 8-2 before UTD brought two in the bottom of the inning and left the bases loaded. The Comets got a run in the 7th on a bases-loaded single by
Melissa Livermore and added an RBI walk drawn by
Amber Williams.
GAME 2 - UTD 9, SRSU 1
The Comets blasted a pair of home runs, including Wilson's second of the night, as UTD rolled to a 9-1, five-inning win over the Lobos in the second game.
UTD opened the scoring with a two-out homer by Williams in the 1st and then added an RBI single by
Jessica Vlasek later in the inning to give the Comets a quick 2-0 lead. The Lobos countered with a single run in the top of the 2nd, but the Comets took back control with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead. UTD added two runs in the 3rd and a walk-off hit in the 5th to complete the run-rule victory.
In the bottom of the 2nd, the Comets picked up a two-run single by
Hope Griffith an a sac fly by Williams before Vlasek capped the four-run inning with an RBI double down the rightfield line. Wilson got her second homer of the day with one in the 3rd and Griffith added another RBI with two outs. The Comets collected four hits in the bottom of the 5th with the game ending on an RBI single by Livermore with no outs.
Nicole Vasicek (3-1) picked up the win, giving up one unearned run on three hits in 4.0 innings of work with three strikeouts.
