RICHARDSON, TX (03.01.19) - The UT Dallas softball team returned to action Friday afternoon with a split to open a three-game American Southwest Conference three-game series with Belhaven.
The Comets (4-4, 3-4 ASC) opened the weekend set with a 4-3 loss to Belhaven, but bounced back for a 9-1, five-inning win over the Blazers in the second game of the day. The two teams will wrap up the series with a single game at 11 a.m. at the UTD Softball Field.
GAME 1 - BU 4, UTD 3
The two teams combined for five runs in the opening frame before Belhaven used a six-inning run to grab a 4-3 win over the Comets to open the weekend series.
The Blazers got a three-run home run from Danielle Darmohray in the top of the 1st to take an early lead, but UTD responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-run shot by
Amber Williams, her second of the season, to cut the BU lead to 3-2.
UTD knotted the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by
Hope Griffith, scoring
Melissa Livermore from third. The Blazers would regain the lead in the top of the 6th on a Darmohray RBI double.
The Comets managed just three hits off of BU starter Bailey Root. Livermore was 1-for-3 from the lead-off spot with two runs scored and two stolen bases. BU's Darmohray was 3-for-3 with four RBI.
GAME 2 - UTD 9, BU 1 (5 innings)
The Comets used a five-run 3rd inning to propel the home team to a 9-1, five-inning win over Belahven in the second game of the day.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the 2nd, the Comets plated two runs in the frame on a
Ravin Wilson home run, her team-leading third of the season, and then added five runs on just three hits in the 3rd frame to take a 7-1 lead. UTD capped their run-rule victory with two runs in the bottom of the 5th.
After UTD scored its first run in the 3rd on a Blazer error, Williams picked up her third RBI of the afternoon with a double down the left field line, scoring Griffith.
Nicole Peters then added an RBI single up the middle, scoring Williams, and
Amy Jensen belted a two-run blast, her second of the year.
Lexi White (1-1) earned her first collegiate victory as she tossed 4.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits.
BriAnna Young tossed a perfect 5th for the Comets. Jensen was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored while Peterson was 2-for-2 as well with three runs scored and an RBI. Wison was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
