RICHARDSON, TX (02.09.19) - UT Dallas junior guard
Dimitrius Underwood became just the second Comet to record 500 points in back-to-back seasons as he ended Thursday's 91-78 win over UT Tyler with 32 points, his second 30-point game of the year.
Not only did Underwood top 500 points in Thursday's win but the Mesquite product also moved into second place on the Comets' all-time rebounding list after recording his conference-leading 13th 'double-double' of the season. With a game-high 12 boards against the Patriots, Underwood now has 641 career rebounds as just a junior, passing former UTD standout Jordan Eppink for second place on the all-time list. Eppink had 630 rebounds during his career from 2006-10. The UTD career record for rebounds is 890, held by Comet great
Kyle Schleigh (2010-14). Underwood also ranks third on the Comet all-time scoring list, now with 1,321 points.
With the win, the Comets improved to 19-4 overall, just one win shy of their first 20-win campaign since the 2013-14 season. UTD returns to action Thursday when they visit LeTourneau in a game that has major American Southwest Conference East Division implications. The winner of that contest will likely claim the ASC East title and host the ASC Tournament, Feb. 21-23. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. in Longview.
The Comets got off to a slow start Saturday as UTT jumped out to an 11-4 lead less the three minutes into the contest. With 14:58 left in the half,
Curtis Allen knotted the contest, 13-13, with a fast-break three-pointer as part of a 12-2 run by UTD and the Comets would not trail again on the afternoon. UTD grabbed its first double-digit lead of the game near the midway point of the half when
Drew Kiser used an old-fashioned three-point play to lift the Comets to a 27-17 advantage with 10:10 on the clock. The Comets would roll into the locker room with a 12-point cushion, 50-38.
The visiting Patriots (4-19) came out hot in the second half and would trim the UTD lead down to four points, 60-56, not seven minutes into the period before the Comets regained their composure. UTD answered with eight quick points, six of which came from Underwood, to regain a 12-point lead and would not lead by less than 10 points for the rest of the afternoon.
One game after setting a school record for team field goal percentage, the Comets shot 50 percent (33-of-66) from the field, connecting on just 4-of-14 three-pointers (28.6%), and were 21-of-30 (70%) from the free-throw line.
