HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (03.21.19) - Playing its four match in as many days, the UT Dallas men's tennis team improved to 6-0 on the young season as the Comets wrapped up their Spring Break road trip with a 9-0 win over Ramapo Thursday morning.
The Comets sailed through doubles play with three quick wins and then picked up six straight-set wins in singles for the squad's second straight shutout victory.
Top-flighted
Ashwin Vaithianathan and
Haydn Steffes opened the match with an 8-1 win, finishing just ahead of both other doubles match ups.
Brandon Giordonelli and
Eric Chen teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 while
Jed De Luna and Mauro Tejada partnered for an 8-1 win at No. 3.
With his first collegiate singles victory, Tejada lifted the Comets to a 5-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Ramapo's Matt Borenkoff at No. 5. Vaithianathan then clinched the Comet team victory with a 6-0, 6-2, win at No. 3 singles.
Mario Jelev (No. 1, 6-2, 6-2),
Giovanni Zamboni (No. 2, 6-3, 6-0), De Luna (No. 4, 6-0, 7-5) and Giordonelli (No. 6, 6-1, 6-0) each added straight set wins to complete the sweep.
The Comets will now open American Southwest Conference West Division play Friday, March 29, when they host Concordia Texas at 1 p.m. at the UTD Tennis Courts.
