AUSTIN, TX (03.30.19) - The UT Dallas baseball team earned a much-needed conference win Saturday afternoon as the Comets upended No. 16-ranked Concordia Texas, 6-1, in the finale of the three-game American Southwest Conference series with the host the Tornados.
The Comets improved to 10-16 overall with Saturday's win and are now 3-6 in ASC play with four league series left in the regular season. UTD is currently on the outside looking in for a spot in the ASC Tournament next month as well an opportunity to defend its league crown from a year ago.
Freshman right-hander
Brett Bihm (2-3) was solid for the Comets as he kept them in the game until UTD plated all six of its runs in the top of the 6th inning. Bihm scattered five hits, giving up one run with a pair of strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.Â
Down 1-0 heading into the 6th, the Comets sent 11 batters to the plate in the pivotal inning as they collected four hits and took advantage of three walks and an a CTX error. With the bases loaded an no outs in the frame,
Dylan Palmer gave UTD the lead with one swing of the bat, plating a pair of Comets with a single to right.
Aaron Fanning followed up with an RBI single of his own before two runs would come home on a
Ryan Sloma single to right, giving the Comets to a 5-1 advantage. UTD capped the six-run frame with a one-out RBI single by
Jacob Perry, scoring Sloma.
Carter Cochrane tossed the final three scoreless innings for the Comets and recorded his first collegiate save as he limited CTX to just one hit and a single walk. Cochrane would retire the Tornados in order in the 9th to seal the win.
The Comets continue ASC play next weekend with a three-game home series with Ozarks. The two squads will play a 2 p.m. single game Friday before a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
