RICHARDSON, TX (04.11.19) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team took a short break from American Southwest Conference play Thursday afternoon to grab a 7-2 home win over NCAA Division II foe Dallas Baptist.
The Comets improved to 9-1 with Thursday's victory, taking 2-of-3 doubles matches against the Patriots and finished the contest with five singles wins.
UTD's duo of
Ashwin Vaithianathan and
Haydn Steffes opened the duel with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Patriots' top team answered with an 8-5 win at No. 1.
Brandon Giordonelli and
Zach Tavallaee helped the cause, however, with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Jed De Luna was the first singles winner of the afternoon for the Comets as he quickly dispatched DBU's Andre Edwards, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 to give UTD a 3-1 lead. Vaithianathan then lifted the Comets to a 4-1 advantage with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Gabe Garrido at No. 3 singles.
Steffes then locked down the team victory for UTD with a 6-3, 6-4, win over Josh Williams.
Giovanni Zamboni (No. 2, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7) and
Eric Chen (No. 5, 6-3, 6-1) also added singles wins for the Comets.
UTD will return to ASC West play Friday with a 1 p.m. home match against Sul Ross State. The Comets will then host Austin College at 5:30 p.m. later that same day in a non-conference match.
