RICHARDSON, TX (04.18.19) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team wrapped up the spring season Thursday afternoon with a 9-0 home win over Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference West Division play.
Up 2-0 due to HPU having only five players, the Comets (13-1, 5-1 ASC West) rolled to a pair of quick doubles wins against the Yellow Jackets and then cruised to the shutout with five straight-set singles wins to conclude the Senior Day victory.
Top-flighted
Mario Jelev and
Giovanni Zamboni opened doubles play with an 8-0 win over HPU's Rodolfo Perez/Albert Hernandez, before the tandem of
Zach Tavallaee and
Ashwin Vaithianathan added an 8-3 win at No. 2 to give UTD a 3-0 lead.
Mason Gillespie notched the Comet team victory with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Jacket Tyler Dingle and No. 5 singles, pushing the UTD lead to 5-0. Jelev (No. 1, 6-1, 6-1),
Haydn Steffes (No. 2, 6-0, 6-0),
Brandon Giordonelli (No. 3, 6-2, 6-1) and Tavallaee (No. 4, 6-1, 6-0) also added singles wins.
The Comets sit in second place in the ASC West heading into next weekend's conference tournament, hosted by East Division champion LeTourneau in Longview.
