Comets Take Series at LeTourneau to Close Regular Season

LONGVIEW, TX (04.27.19) - The UT Dallas baseball wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader split at LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference play. After dropping Saturday's first game, 6-3, the Comets bounced back for a 19-7 win in the series finale and take the set with the Yellow Jackets, 2-1.

The Comets (20-19, 12-9 ASC) will head to the ASC Tournament next weekend for the 10th consecutive season, but are still awaiting their tournament seed and location for the opening round. Regular-season champion Howard Payne and second-seeded Concordia Texas will serve as hosts of the two four-team opening round events, May 2-3, with the highest remaining seed hosting the league championship series, May 9-11. UTD will not learn its fate until the complete of the ASC regular season Sunday.

GAME 1 - LETU 6, UTD 3
The Comets plated two runs in the top of the 7th but it was not enough as the host Yellow Jackets evened the series with a 6-3 victory in Saturday's opener.

Down 1-0, the Comets tied the game in the top of the 4th with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Burciaga, scoring Jacob Perry. However, LETU added three runs in the bottom of the frame and two more in the 5th to snag a 6-1 cushion.

With runners on the corners with one out in the top of the 7th, Zach Jordan brought home Thomas Craig with a ground out to third base to cut the LETU lead to four runs. Aaron Fanning followed with an RBI double to left center, scoring Burciaga, but the Comets were not able to get the potential game-tying run to the plate.

The Comets managed just two hits in the entire contest off of LETU starter Kolton Eberlan. Brett Bihm would toss a complete game for the Comets, striking out two.

GAME 2 - UTD 15, LETU 4 (8 inn.)
The Comets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning and never looked back as they closed the weekend set with the Yellow Jackets with a 15-7 victory.

After back-to-back singles and a wild pitch to open the game, UTD opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Craig, scoring lead-off hitter Matt Mikusek. Burciaga then added to the UTD lead with an RBI double to right, scoring Perry. Dylan Palmer and Fanning each added RBI singles in the 1st before the Comets would take a 5-0 lead on a LETU wild pitch that allowed Edmundo Ojeda to score.

After LETU got two runs back in the bottom of the 2nd, the Comets scored single runs in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th frames to eventually take a 9-4 advantage. UTD then exploded for four runs in the 7th and plated two final runs in the top of the 8th.

UTD got a two-run double by Craig followed by a run-scoring single by Burciaga to score the first three runs in the 7th. The Comets later got a fourth run on an RBI groundout by Fanning, scoring Burciaga.

The Comets got two runs in the 8th as Burciaga and Ojeda were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded and added four final runs in the 9th and two-run his by Craig and Dylan Palmer.

UTD finished the lop-sided victory with 16 hits with the top six batters in the Comet line-up recorded multi-hit performances. Craig tallied a team-best five RBI while Burciaga and Palmer had four RBI each.

Comet starter Blake DiValerio scattered five hits while giving up four earned runs in 4.0 innings of work. DiValerio struck out four while issuing just one walk. Orion Drymond picked up the win in relief, holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless with two strikeouts through 3.0 innings.
