Livermore Breaks ASC Hit Record, Comets Close Series With Big Win

RICHARDSON, TX (04.07.19) - In her first plate appearance of the game, UT Dallas senior outfielder Melissa Livermore recorded her 260th career hit, setting a new conference mark, as the UT Dallas softball team rolled to a 15-3, five-inning win over Ozarks Sunday afternoon to wrap up a three-game American Southwest Conference series.

Livermore's 1st inning bunt did not even draw a throw from the Ozarks' third baseman as the three-time All-American for the Comets needed to see just four pitches to break the ASC career hits record (259), previously held by former UT Tyler All-American Joey Cronin (2010-13). Livermore would add single up the middle in the 4th frame to finish off her 2-for-4 outing and make her 261-for-522 with a .473 career batting average. She is currently tied for 13th on the all-time NCAA Division III hits list. Earlier this season, Livermore became the NCAA D-III career stolen base leader, now with 192 swipes in her four years with the Comets. After five more stolen bases in the weekend series with Ozarks, she now sits 12th all-time on the NCAA all-division steals list.

Not be overshadowed, UTD senior outfielder Amber Williams also etched her name into the ASC record book during the Comets' lop-sided victory Sunday as she finished the game 2-for-2 with a league-record-tying eight RBI. Williams broke the old program record of seven RBI, set by Amber Griffin in 2007, and joined two other former ASC players to have eight RBI in a single contest. Williams had an RBI sacrifice bunt in the 1st inning, belted a grand slam home run in the 2nd and added a three-run long ball in the 3rd. She recorded her second multi-home run game of the season and produced the Comets' school-record fourth grand slam of the season.

After her lead-off single in the 1st, Livermore would later score on Williams' one-out bunt. The Comets then added two runs on a double by Ravin Wilson and a final tally on an Amy Jensen's fifth triple of the season to take a 4-0 lead after the opening frame. Williams' first long ball of the afternoon accounted for all the offense in the 2nd inning, pushing UTD's lead to 8-1. The Comets then added six runs in the 3rd, thanks to a pair of home runs, to snag a 13-run cushion.

Nicole Peters started the Comets' six-run 3rd frame with a one-out solo home run center, her third of the season, before Hope Griffith added a two-out RBI single to right, three batters later. Williams then stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and blasted her team-leading eighth home run of the spring to push the Comets' lead to 13-1. After another double by Wilson, Emily Schroeder completed the scoring in the 3rd with an RBI single to right center.

The visiting Eagles scored two runs in the top of the 4th on just two hits, taking advantage of a pair of one out walks, but UTD answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame on an Elizabeth Brann sacrifice fly, scoring Jensen.

BriAnna Young (7-4) earned the win in the circle, giving up three runs on three hits with a strikeout in 3.1 innings pitched. Brann recorded the final five outs, scattering two hits.

The third win over the weekend over Ozarks lifted the Comets to a 14-13 overall record and now 10-10 in ASC play, sitting in a tie for fifth place in the league with six games remaining to play. UTD hits the road next weekend for a three-game ASC set at fourth place LeTourneau (17-13, 14-10 ASC). The two teams will play a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday before wrapping up the series with a 1 p.m. single game Saturday in Longview.
