Comets Close Season With Loss to No. 1 C-M-S in NCAA Tourney

CLAREMONT, CA (05.10.10) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team had its 2019 campaign close Friday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to No. 1-ranked and regional host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the second round of the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.

The Comets ended the spring with a 16-2 overall record, setting a program record for both wins and winning percentage. UTD claimed its second-ever American Southwest Conference title and made its second trip to the national tournament this season.

The host Stags (30-1) earned three hard-fought doubles wins before taking two short-lived singles victories to secure the shutout of the Comets. UTD's top-flighted doubles tandem of Mario Jelev and Giovanni Zamboni put up the toughest defense against top-ranked C-M-S, before falling to 8-6.

Haydn Steffes and Ashwin Vaithianathan suffered an 8-4 loss at No. 2 doubles while Eric Chen and Brandon Giordanellli were handed an 8-3 loss at No. 3.

Singles play opened with Jelev dropping a 6-1, 6-2, decision to C-M-S's Nikolai Parodi. The dual then ended with a 6-0, 6-0, win by Stag Nic Meister over Jed De Luna.
